Job overview and responsibilities

The Counsel - Labor and Employment position will serve as a Labor and Employment Law attorney for United's in-house legal department. This position provides legal counsel, guidance and conducts research as needed for all aspects of federal, state and local labor and employment/labor laws and regulations. The position is responsible for day to day counseling, managing and supporting employment and labor litigation, and working on special projects related to compliance and employment/labor related matters.

  • Provide legal counsel and guidance and conduct research as needed for Company on all aspects of Federal, State and local employment and labor laws and regulations

  • Assist in development and implementation of employment and labor-related company policies and programs

  • Handle major, complex and/or sensitive projects or issues with minimal review

  • Manage and direct outside counsel, including taking the lead in developing strategy and tactics

  • Handle smaller employment litigation matters

  • Conduct training and presentations on various employment law issues of legal significance in various forums

  • Review Federal and State discrimination charges and investigations

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree and Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree

  • +5 years significant counseling experience on all aspects of Federal and State EEO statutes (Title VII, ADA, ADEA), as well as FMLA and wage and hour law

  • Law firm experience in the area of employment litigation

  • License to practice law in at least one state

  • Ability to work in a fast pace, high demand environment

  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and be committed to providing exemplary customer service to leadership of all levels

  • Must be a results-oriented self-starter who can work both independently and on a team

  • Extensive knowledge of employment law and some labor law

  • Familiarity of interplay between employment and labor law

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
