Job overview and responsibilities

The United Airlines’ Environmental Affairs internship is designed to give enrolled students insights into environmental policy, compliance, sustainability, and environmental strategy within one of the largest airlines in the world. The internship combines a student's academic and career interests with valuable work experience in the commercial aviation environment.

The Environmental Affairs intern will serve as an internal consultant, providing business analyses to management of various operating divisions on environmental challenges and opportunities facing the airline. This may include the following areas of focus:

  • Supporting program area development for all environmental media

  • Measuring United’s environmental impact

  • Reducing United’s environmental impact

  • Support regulatory tool development and socialization/training

  • Auditing recycling and waste management procedures

  • Analyzing environmental policy landscape

The intern will also gather and analyze information, interpret data from various sources, and consider available solutions or alternative methods of proceeding. Additionally, the Environmental Affairs intern will study organizational changes, communications, information flow, and gathering and organizing information regarding environmental problems and procedures.

This is a part-time internship beginning in January 2019 at our office in Chicago.

Required Qualifications

  • A clear interest in and passion for environmental issues

  • Must be a current undergraduate student

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office suite programs

  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills

  • Solid interpersonal skills and able to adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Travel up to 25% may be required

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred Qualifications

  • Junior or Senior status in undergraduate

  • Science or Engineering degree in environmental focus area

  • Strong GPA

  • Aviation background
