The Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) department is responsible for overseeing United's budget and forecast, long-term business plan, capital plan and financial analysis.

Job overview and responsibilities

The Early Career Acceleration Program (Accelerate) in Finance is designed to focus on the technical, financial, and leadership skills of early career, underrepresented individuals. Diverse candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Participants will be supported through a variety of experiences including experiential and action learning, course training, mentorship and peer coaching, virtual knowledge sharing, and networking.

During Accelerate, you will be fully immersed in our collaborative culture built on diversity of thought. Our teams will be looking for your curiosity and your unique point of view. This is a two-year program where participants will be able to gain exposure to two areas of interest within FP&A. Candidates will have the option to work with diverse areas in financial, strategic, and technical roles, gaining business partnership knowledge and increasing their overall financial acumen at United. Candidates selected for Accelerate will be given detailed assignment overviews and self-select into a role based on interest ranking, skillset and availability. All candidates will receive continuous growth opportunities through personal and development initiatives outside their direct role.

United is engaged in a multi-year strategic program to reduce operating costs and increase efficiency. A dedicated high-caliber team has been formed to spearhead this effort. The team’s objective is to work with all business leaders to identify sustainable cost savings while improving the quality of the employee experience and United’s products and services.

This position will lead cross-functional project teams tasked with identifying and pursuing cost savings and efficiency improvements. Projects will span all areas of the company as required by business needs.

  • Manage projects through their full lifecycles, from initial concept and sizing to implementation alongside business partners

  • Present analyses and recommendations to various stakeholders, including senior management, in a clear and concise manner

  • Establish key performance metrics and work with business units to analyze drivers, recommend improvements, and ensure accountability

  • Assist Finance leaders develop new ideas to improve United's cost structure, productivity, and efficiency

  • Track the financial performance of initiatives using dashboards and other tracking tools

  • Drive process improvements within the FP&A organization


  • College degree or 3-4 years of experience plus a high school degree

  • 2-4 years of experience in finance, consulting, or a relevant related field

  • Proven success in team leadership and project management roles

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and navigate organizational interdependencies

  • Adept at juggling several projects simultaneously through appropriate prioritization

  • Ability to deliver presentations to senior leadership

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal guidance

  • Demonstrated ability to generate creative solutions to difficult or nebulous problems

  • Familiarity with consulting and strategy frameworks

  • High executive presence and strong ability to influence

  • Detail-oriented and thorough with a deep desire for continuous improvement

  • High proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge of accounting practices and financial statements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Consulting experience

  • Airline or travel industry experience (work or educational)

  • Knowledge of basic SQL preferred

  • Knowledge of data visualization tools, such as Spotfire

  • Knowledge of Hyperion Planning
