Job overview and responsibilities

Within this Product Manager role at United Airlines, you will be responsible for products within Customer Travel Platforms. The team develops, maintains, and expands enterprise services and applications which cover the travel portion of a customer’s journey, including reservation management, seats, upgrades, checking, notifications, and baggage. You will define the team roadmap, manage work intake, both internally define enhancement and requirements from other enterprise teams, and ensuring the team delivers on commitments effectively and efficiently. This role will ensure that our investments in customer travel are sustainable and meaningfully improve the experience of our customers and coworkers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, communicate, and coordinate

  • Analyze and define efficient, cost effective solutions to support company objectives, CTP objectives, business processes and functional requirements all geared towards improving our customer’s journey

  • Define and communicate the roadmap for services and applications within your domain; ensure the roadmap supports company objectives and aligns with company priorities

  • Maintain capacity management plans for the team, ensuring roadmaps align with team capacity

  • Define and communicate deliverables that align with CTP roadmaps; confirm team capacity prior to communicating deliverables

  • Use detailed knowledge of service features and functions to assess scope and impact of business needs

  • Interact with business partners, enterprise project teams, and channel teams to understand their needs and priorities

  • Work with the analysts or Subject Matter Expect in the analysis of business processes and functional requirements to support user story generation and grooming

  • Work with development teams to generate design documents

  • Create, maintain, and prioritize product backlog

  • Run (or ensure a Scrum Master runs) grooming sessions, iteration planning sessions and other agile ceremonies

  • Provide project estimates and submit funding requests

  • Monitor progress of deliverables, keep dependent teams and projects informed on progress; take corrective action if deliverable cannot be met or if higher priorities disrupt prior commitments

  • Support the Enterprise Quality Assurance team to ensure they can properly perform function and non-functional testing

  • Review and validate QA test plans; support the QA team during test execution

  • Communicate team progress, accomplishments and KPIs to upper management

  • Demonstrate an innovative mentality by staying aware of new developments within the product management space

  • Stay abreast of United’s business strategy, and other internal initiatives that intersect channel strategy and impact similar stakeholders.

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or other related field or 8 years of equivalent work experience required.

  • Solid knowledge of product management best practices, functional design and application delivery methodology

  • 5+ years of prior experience as a Product Manager working within an enterprise IT organization

  • While not a developer, candidate should possess a high-level understanding of IT systems and architecture to support discussions and communications

  • Strong multi-tasker, proven experience handling multiple roles and projects simultaneously

  • Experience working with cross-functional, global teams to deliver commitments on-time and on-budget

  • Excellent analysis, problem solving and decision-making skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Strong communication skills – verbal, written, and presentation

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Visio, and agile tools (JIRA, TFS/Azure DevOps)

  • ‘Can do’ attitude, willing to take on new challenges with a desire to continually grow in the Product Management space

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • Knowledge of project management methodology and some project management experience

  • Experienced with both agile and waterfall

  • Experience using JIRA and TFS/Azure DevOps

  • Prior experience with cloud (AWS) applications

  • Experience with data analytics and business intelligence (BI) tools

  • Airline experience
