Job overview and responsibilities

The Senior Manager, Social Impact Optimization is responsible for integrating the four cornerstones of United’s social impact plan into our business. This leader will elevate United as a company that is committed to breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion, flying toward a more sustainable future, lifting communities in crisis after disaster and inspiring the next generation of leaders. This position focuses on optimizing social outcomes through collaborative partnerships with United business units including Human Resources, Corporate Safety, Cargo, Environmental, and Government Affairs. This position reports into the Managing Director, Social Impact Optimization.

Collaborative strategic planning.

  • Promote internal awareness of the four cornerstones of the social impact plan and why United is uniquely positioned to deliver solutions to address societal needs within the focus areas.

  • Along with key business units, develop solutions that integrate United’s assets, align with business strategies and impact social outcomes.

  • Attend already established business unit meetings and coordinate ad hoc meetings as needed to maintain an understanding of United’s business strategies and where they align with United’s social impact plan.

Social issue expertise.

  • Maintain subject matter expertise in each of the four cornerstone social impact areas: diversity & inclusion, sustainability, humanitarian response and workforce development. Identify and establish relationships with key internal and external subject matter experts in each area.

  • Attend industry/partner conferences and forums to keep abreast of advancements, updates and developing needs in each social area.

  • Assess leading nonprofits and other corporations addressing the same social issue areas for benchmarking and to identify best practices.

Partnership management and activation.

  • Manage portfolio of global partnerships aligned to four cornerstone social impact areas.

  • Lead the coordination and execution of partnership activations with the support of the Global Community Engagement team.

  • Regularly evaluate partnership terms and identify opportunities for increased efficiencies and outcomes.

  • Where relevant, facilitate introductions between nonprofit partners and United leaders, other businesses and/or employees.


  • 5 years experience in a non-profit organization OR on a corporate non-profit team

  • 5 years experience non-profit planning, administration or program management

  • 5 years experience with progressive project, partnership and/or team management

  • Experience briefing and working with executive leaders

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence

  • Maturity to drive change in a complex environment

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
