United Airlines Senior Engineer - Aircraft Cyber Security in Chicago, Illinois

United Airlines is growing faster than ever, and we are looking for a Senior Engineer – Aircraft Cybersecurity Operations. The Senior Engineer – Aircraft Cyber Operations will be responsible for coordinating with both internal and external partners, such as Avionics Engineering, Powerplant Engineering, Government Affairs, Corporate Safety, Industry working groups, OEMs, and the FAA to drive United’s aircraft cybersecurity operations to be consistent with the latest developments in aviation cybersecurity. This individual will support identifying the aviation cyber risk landscape and will support driving cybersecurity threat analysis and assessment actions, perform security tests, and validate security mitigations that should be executed to ensure a safe and secure continued airworthiness for all United aircraft!

How you’ll make an impact

  • Mentor a team on aviation cyber risks and risk assessment methodologies

  • Develop and present aviation cyber security risk-related papers, reports, alerts, and bulletins

  • Perform aviation cyber risk assessments in accordance with industry standards and best practices

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on third-party relations in the aviation space and the associated cybersecurity risk

  • Document all United partners and third-parties associated with aviation cybersecurity

  • Maintain and build relationships with key cybersecurity aviation partners both internal and external to the company

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in STEM or Engineering Field of Study, such as Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Security Engineering, or other applicable technical degree

  • At least 4 or more years of combined related experience in either aircraft engineering, aircraft cybersecurity, embedded product security, or other similar related fields

  • Prior Aviation experience (OEM, Supplier, Operator, Airport, Maintenance, etc.)

  • Knowledge of airport operations, aircraft avionics, cabin and propulsion systems

  • Knowledge of security risk methodologies consistent with the aviation industry

  • Risk identification and assessment skills

  • Knowledge of basic cryptography concepts

  • High-level understanding of network exploitation, attack strategies and methods, current IT security technology, software and cyber threat mitigation tools

  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems, network design, embedded security, and security architecture principles

  • Ability to concisely and accurately convey complex cybersecurity concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Abillity to work in teams and across business functions

  • Ability to work well under pressure and time constraints

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills

Plus factors

  • CISSP, GSEC, and/or relevant SANS-equivalent cybersecurity certification

  • Critical infrastructure or government experience

  • Experience navigating hardware-based security techniques and assessments

  • Strong programming skills

  • Knowledge of digital design and understanding of hardware at the component levels
