Technical Operations

Technical Operations is the maintenance, repair and overhaul division of United. The department includes aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities teams, supply chain teams and more.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

The engineer will be responsible for providing technical support to engine maintenance consisting of research, process and repair development, and technical disposition that result in safe, legal, reliable and cost effective solutions for maintenance issues related to the design, operation, maintenance, performance, modification, and/or repair of turbofan engines.

  • Development, authoring and/or approving of clear, accurate and concise technical documents used for the maintenance, repair, testing and overhaul of engines and engine modules, components and piece parts

  • Analysis and implementation of solutions for issues related to design, operation, performance, modification, and/or repair of engines and engine modules, components and piece parts

  • Leading investigations by gathering relevant data, reporting shop findings, understanding failure or distress modes, and initiating corrective and/or preventive actions in support of root cause determination for engine performance anomalies, failure analysis, and/or operational issues

  • Liaison between third party customers, UA maintenance, vendors and manufacturers to assure appropriate maintenance actions are identified and implemented to improve reliability, cost and quality

  • Engineering support for engine test cell and performance analysis troubleshooting

  • Review, analyze and interpret modular performance data to identify product improvement opportunities and performance issues

  • Review and approve PMA parts for engines and components

  • Author and continually evaluate and implement improvements for engine products and engineering processes and procedures

  • Pursue advancements in area of expertise to improve technical skills and maintenance practices and processes

  • Provide off shift or weekend engineering support for operational issues, as required


  • B.S. Degree in Engineering

  • Equivalent relative work experience

  • Knowledge and proficiency with Engine and Component Maintenance Manuals and OEM drawings, and the industry accepted practices used in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft engines, engine modules, components and piece parts

  • Knowledge of engine operation, performance, common distress modes and failure analysis for engines and related parts


  • Strong knowledge in engine performance testing and troubleshooting

  • Knowledgeable of airworthiness, repair substantiation criteria and FAA regulatory requirements, specifically 14 CFR Parts 25, 33,121 and 145

  • FAA Airframe & Power plant License(s)

  • Aerospace or Mechanical engineering degree

  • Advanced degree This position will be hired as either an Engineer-Level 6, Senior Engineer-Level 5 or Principal Engineering-Level 4. The selection will be based on level of experience, qualifications and certifications.

  • Engineer (level 6) requires entry level to 3 years of engineering experience supporting engine maintenance, repair and overhaul operations.

  • Senior Engineer (level 5) requires a minimum of 3 years of engineering experience supporting engine maintenance, repair and overhaul operations.

  • Principal Engineer (level 4) requires minimum of 10 years of experience and strong knowledge and extensive experience on engine testing, troubleshooting and performance analysis.

  • Experience and knowledge of engine performance analysis or test cell engineering support is preferred.

  • Design, repair, manufacturing and/or system engineering experience in powerplant engineering discipline is preferred.
