Job overview and responsibilities
The Manager, Air Traffic Systems provides leadership, expertise, and real-time decision-making for issues regarding aircraft movement on the ramp/apron area of San Francisco International Airport (SFO). He/she is the immediate supervisor to the ATS ramp controllers and is a liaison to his/her counterpart in the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower and the SFIA.
Supervises the actions of ramp controllers to ensure an orderly and expeditious flow of traffic to and from gates.
Coordinate with SFIA and Systems Operations to determine priority handling requirements for optimum DOT performance.
Must possess a good working knowledge of aircraft performance and air traffic flows—terminal and surface.
Manages ground movement of aircraft to optimize the flow of departures to ground control, based on ATC Traffic Mangement Initiaitves and restrictions, established FAA departure procedures, and company priorities.
Coordinates and disseminates pertinent information to respective station Operations Coordination Center, and appropriate departments.
Coordinates with local Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local airport authority officials to maximize efficiency.
Oversees ramp control activities and coordinates with local FAA facilities on a “real-time” basis to stage, sequence and in some cases coordinate departure routes through dispatch to minimize departure delays.
Proactive coordination with company ATC coordinators and then local FAA facilities to avoid potential diversions due to weather or airborne holding.
Provides focused attention on United’s operational priorities, e.g., focus flights, “Red Zone arrivals”, and other time-sensitive and focus destinations.
Monitors the airport surface using web-based tools to facilitate expeditious movement to and from ramp areas so as to avoid long taxi delay.
Occasionally performs ATS Ramp Control duties.
Scheduling of ATS Ramp Controllers
Certifies ramp controllers to work unsupervised.
Oversees new-hire training and conducts recurrent training of certified controllers.
Conducts annual performance review of ramp controllers to identify positive and negative trends.
High School Diploma
Intimate knowledge of Airline/Airport Operations
3-4 years of management experience in Airline/Airport Operations
4-year College Degree
Ramp Control certification
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
