Our Corporate Communications department manages relationships with the media and shares information about the company both externally and to our employees worldwide.

Job overview and responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Hub Communications, the Senior Manager will lead communications efforts on behalf of United with a focus on the airline’s San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX) hubs. This position will work as an integral member of United’s Corporate Communications team to conceive, manage and implement campaigns to promote the United brand both externally and internally in these key markets. In addition, this communicator will manage day-to-day media inquiries for SFO and LAX, while serving as a company spokesperson. The Senior Manager will also be expected to develop relationships with media outlets in both regions, and effectively integrate with internal communications to amplify positive news coverage and enhance employee engagement.

  • Lead development and execution of communications plans and messaging, focused on external and internal channels, for all programs and initiatives in the San Francisco & Los Angeles markets

  • Drive the development of relevant content/materials, for example, communications plans, talking points, news releases, FAQs and more

  • Assist with developing themes and messages based on the business for local campaigns, events and activities

  • Conceive and organize stories and initiatives that generate media coverage, brand awareness and goodwill

  • Serve as the media relations lead for the San Francisco and Los Angeles markets, building and maintaining strong relationships with reporters, influencers and other key external stakeholders

  • Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson, proactively pitching stories while responding to media inquiries

  • Brief, inform and counsel local United leaders and spokespeople

  • Serve as internal communications lead for the markets, developing and reporting unique stories that highlight our local leaders, frontline employees, operation and strategy in the San Francisco and Los Angeles markets

  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with frontline employees, internal influencers, hub leadership and airport officials

  • Create engaging content and communications materials – such as talking points and FAQs – as needed to support our local leaders and employees in these regions


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or related field

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of PR/communications experience

  • Firm grasp of and relationships with Bay Area and L.A. media as well as with relevant business and/or travel media

  • Expertise in the evolving media landscape and ability to work with traditional and non-traditional media

  • Proficiency with social media platforms and capturing appropriate content (video, photography)

  • Experience in a communications and/or PR department

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams

  • Exemplary writing and editing skills

  • Superior media relations capabilities and instincts

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
